Ubuntu 22.04 Memory Requirements

If you install Ubuntu 22.04 on a VPS with only 512 MB RAM, you may encounter the error:

Kernel panic - not syncing: System is deadlocked on memory

Ubuntu 22.04 requires at least 1 GB of RAM. The distro’s updated system requirements mean that 512 MB plans no longer meet the minimum, producing the kernel panic during boot.

  • Upgrade your VPS to 1 GB RAM or higher, or
  • Install a different Ubuntu release (older or newer) that supports 512 MB plans.

Once you increase the memory or switch versions, the system boots normally without the panic.
